CogNovo fellow Ilaria Torre presented her work at the 8th Tutorial and Research Workshop on Experimental Linguistics (ExLing), which took place in Hersonissos (Crete) on 19-22 June. Her talk, entitled "Playing the trust game with talkative robots", presented the results from one of the experiments she carried out as part of her PhD, where participants played the investment game with Nao robots which had different voices. Ilaria also won an award from the conference organisers, which partially covered the conference registration fees. Her talk was given in the highlight workshop "Using robots to study speech", organised by Dr. Kerstin Fischer, from the University of Southern Denmark. The presentations in the highlight workshop gave interesting real-like examples of how to use robots to study speech; the advantage of using robots speaking instead of people is that their voice and behaviour can be controlled perfectly, allowing to obtain replicable results.
